About culinary education in Germany
How culinary education is structured
In Germany the cook profession is mainly learned through recognised vocational training, and advanced culinary qualifications are obtained through nationwide chamber (IHK) examinations such as Küchenmeister, which training providers prepare students for. Fachschulen (technical colleges) can combine state-certified qualifications with the master examination.
Qualification structures
Names and levels are local to Germany. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.
- Küchenmeister IHK (Geprüfte/-r Küchenmeister/-in)
- A nationwide IHK examination with admission based on a completed recognised apprenticeship plus professional practice; GBZ Koblenz states the preparation course is aligned to DQR level 6 and Eckert Schulen describes the title as Bachelor Professional Cookery and Kitchen Management (CCI). Source
- Staatlich geprüfter Gastronom (Fachschule für Gastronomie)
- Heidelberg describes a one-year Fachschule with more than 1,200 teaching hours whose final exam is recognised by the IHK as the theoretical part of the master exam. Source
